Premise
Four operatives. One aid mission. A war that doesn’t care about either.
It’s 1933. Bolivia and Paraguay have spent a year bleeding each other dry over a stretch of scrubland nobody can actually use – the Chaco War, fought with rifles, disease, and thirst in equal measure.
The Caduceus Foundation doesn’t take sides. It delivers medicine, checks on its people, and gets out again. That’s the job. That’s always been the job.
Except the radio’s gone quiet.
A week of silence from an international aid camp isn’t unusual, not out there — bad atmospherics, worse roads, equipment that gives up in the heat. Nobody’s panicking. Not yet.
Drop in. Check on the camp. Extract.
Should be simple.
It never is.
The Stars
R. Dobson
Ex-Foreign Office man turned insurance investigator — fraud, arson, sabotage, disappearances. Believes everyone’s truth serves their own interests, and that most people are responsible for their own choices in a harsher world than they’d like to admit.
Priorities: truth, recovery, get home alive. Doesn’t complain, respects competence. Rule: never draw a gun unless prepared to use it. Not much fun at dinner.
Jean-Pierre Torteau
French engineer, pilot and mechanic from Le Touquet. Broad as a wardrobe, bald as a cannonball, and usually covered in oil, Jean-Pierre can coax life out of almost any engine with a wrench, bad language and stubborn determination. Gruff on first meeting but fiercely loyal, he trusts machines more than people and has yet to encounter a problem he believes cannot be repaired—provided everyone else stops talking long enough to let him work.
Shen Liang
A Taoist scholar and wanderer from Hangzhou, Shen Liang has spent decades pursuing forgotten knowledge, ancient traditions and the truths that lie beneath the ordinary world. Soft-spoken and deeply learned, he studies every place and object with quiet patience, often drawing conclusions that leave others wondering how he knew. He rarely claims certainty, but he is seldom surprised.
Rex Calloway
